Sony is Developing a New Tool Aimed at Helping Developers Better Utilize the PS5's Haptic Feedback Features.
Published 15 Oct 2024
Sony has filed a patent for a hand device aimed at helping game developers better utilize the PlayStation 5's haptic feedback technology. The PS5 DualSense controller's haptic feedback has gained attention, particularly in games like Astro Bot, and Sony's new device could make it easier for developers to integrate these immersive features into their games.

The patent, published on October 3, describes a haptic feedback hand strap that allows developers to feel feedback vibrations without needing to hold a controller. This would enable quicker and more efficient testing of haptic settings as developers could make adjustments on the fly without having to switch between a keyboard, mouse, and controller. This innovation could streamline the game development process, potentially leading to more widespread use of haptic feedback features in future titles.

While the hand strap device is still just a patent with no official announcement from Sony regarding its release, it signals the company’s focus on improving haptic feedback. Though the PS5's haptic features have been praised, few games fully exploit them. If Sony releases this device, it could encourage more studios to adopt the technology and create more immersive gaming experiences.
