Stuck in the Past: Why Half of Gamers Refuse to Let Go of Their PS4s
Published 29 May 2024
In the latest saga of Sony's console conundrum, it's revealed that half of PlayStation's loyal gamers are still clinging to their trusty PS4s instead of jumping ship to the shiny new PS5. Why, you ask? Well, it seems the lack of exclusive games is a major buzzkill. The PS5, despite being a mostly successful venture for Sony, stumbled out of the gate thanks to a perfect storm of a global pandemic, supply chain snafus, and scalpers who made it easier to find Bigfoot than a PS5 in the first two years. Sure, COVID-19 threw a wrench in the works, but now that the dust has settled, it appears gamers are still waiting for that "gotta-have-it" moment.

Sony, with 59 million PS5s sold, should be popping champagne, but instead, they're adjusting their sales forecasts downwards. Why? Because PS4 gamers aren't convinced to upgrade when they can still play hits like Fortnite, Minecraft, and GTA 5 without shelling out for new hardware. The PS5 exclusive lineup, boasting a whopping 11 titles, isn't exactly blowing anyone's socks off, especially when most major games are still catering to the previous generation. And with no blockbuster exclusives on the horizon for the rest of 2024, Sony might need a miracle—or perhaps Grand Theft Auto 6 in fall 2025, which could finally push the casual gamers off their PS4 couches and into the arms of a PS5. Until then, we'll see if Sony can find a way to make the PS5 irresistible before Rockstar saves the day.
